Phase two of Childcare Affordability Programme will aim to meet local needs

The second phase of the government's scheme to subsidise childcare in London, which is expected to launch next month, will be tailored to the needs of individual boroughs.

Phase two of the Childcare Affordability Programme, dubbed Cap 09, will be launched at the same time as the government's refreshed childcare strategy, which sector sources have suggested will be published on 16 December.

The original £33m programme, implemented by the London Development Agency (LDA) and aimed at parents with children under five, was launched in 2005 to subsidise childcare places for London families in a bid to help them return to work. Phase two will cover care for children up to the age of 14.

Denise Burke, head of childcare at the LDA, said that new funding would be available before Christmas for phase two of the programme. The government had previously not commented on whether the second phase of the scheme would receive funding.
