Childcare: London mayor to defend strategy

1 min read
London mayor Ken Livingstone will publicly defend the way his childcare strategy has been taken forward when he responds to a critical report.

The report by the London Assembly's Economic Development, Culture, Sportand Tourism Committee, said the London Development Agency had notaddressed the needs of disabled children (Children Now, 21-27 June).

At the assembly's last meeting the committee used special powers to makethe mayor respond to the report's eight recommendations. Theserecommendations included targeting some of the agency's 33mChildcare Affordability Programme on deprived areas with childcareshortages.

But Denise Burke, the agency's senior childcare manager told ChildrenNow the mayor would argue that targeting low-income families was theright approach. She acknowledged the need for better support forfamilies with children with disabilities and special educationalneeds.

"But you get the sense from the report that provision should be ready toslot a child in," she added. "In reality each child is unique and weneed new ways of developing individual care packages."
