Child protection: Solihull councillors to be CRB checked

All councillors elected to Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council are to undergo Criminal Records Bureau checks as part of the council's response to the Bichard report.

Kevin Crompton, Solihull's director of children's services and chair of the Association of Directors of Education and Children's Services, said the council initially only planned to check members of its scrutiny boards but had decided to expand the scheme.

The council is also considering checking school governors but is waiting for guidance from the Department for Education and Skills before making a decision.

The borough has more than 50 councillors.
