Employers could be forced to pay double the current rate to checkwhether employees are suitable to work with children.
The price hike will be introduced to pay for the new vetting and barringscheme that the Government is introducing in response to the BichardInquiry into the Soham murders. The predicted annual cost of running thescheme has leapt from 8m to 22m and a source on theGovernment's Bichard implementation team revealed: "The ongoing costswill be met by increased charges for Criminal Records Bureauchecks."
Concerns about the expense have been raised. David Hawker, director ofchildren's service at Brighton & Hove City Council, warned thatchildren's services departments could be forced to withdraw funding fromcertain services to meet the rising costs.
