Childcare students may have to pay for their criminal recordschecks under proposals in the criminal records bureau's annual reportpublished last week.
A six per cent increase in free checks for volunteers contributed to thebureau's 8m deficit.
Students on work placements as part of their courses will not be classedas volunteers and so will have to pay for their checks. The bureau'svolunteering consultative group will decide who should get freechecks.
The bureau hit its time targets for processing checks.
Meanwhile the National Day Nurseries Association urged the Governmentnot to charge employers for an enhanced vetting scheme for peopleworking with children.
