CRB CHECKS: Charities call for Home Office to impose checks on IT specialists

Pressure is mounting on the Home Office to institute Criminal Records Bureau checks on IT specialists who have access to computer records about children and vulnerable adults.

Children's charity Barnardo's is among the organisations that have written to the Home Office arguing that checks should be extended to IT staff because they could use their technical knowledge to obtain information for paedophile purposes.

Bob Cook, standards and risks manager at Barnardo's, said this was now the main question colleagues raised with him in relation to the CRB. "We've made representations about this and I'm sure others have done the same," he said. "In a digital age, it's not just a question of looking at people who have direct access to children. We also have to think about people who have access to information about children."
