Child Protection: London authorities target faith groups

Eight London authorities have teamed up with the Metropolitan Police to step up efforts to combat child abuse in faith communities.

The move came as an African pastor was arrested in London last week onsuspicion of inciting child cruelty.

The London Child Protection Committee is co-ordinating the project inBrent, Camden, En-field, Hackney, Haringey, Islington, Newham andSouthwark. It will build on a community partnership project commissionedby the police in 2005 as part of their response to the death of VictoriaClimbie.

"The project will build mutual awareness of child protection issuesbetween practitioners," said Detective Superintendent Chris Bourlet,head of Project Violet, the Met's child protection team that works withdiverse communities to safeguard children.
