The boroughs of Brent, Camden, Enfield, Hackney, Haringey, Islington,Newham and Southwark are appointing community partnership advisers tohelp them forge links with faith communities. Newham expects to havesomeone in post by next week, Camden within six weeks.
Catherine Doran, assistant director of children, schools and families atCamden Council, said: "Faith communities and voluntary groups areabsolutely essential to safeguarding children. To help them do this weneed to invest in training people to deal with the issues themselves andmake sure they know what to do if they suspect abuse."
She said the new adviser would help train religious groups about thechild abuse implications around spirit possession and femalecircumcision.
