He takes over from Detective Chief Superintendent Derrick Kelleher, who set up a centralised structure for police child protection work in the capital following the Victoria Climbie inquiry. DCS Kelleher has now joined the National Criminal Intelligence Service.
Last week, DCS Spindler told a conference of child protection co-ordinators from London social services departments that his unit would continue to build on lessons learned from the Climbie inquiry.
He also briefed them about a police investigation into child trafficking through Heathrow Airport, details of which will shortly be published.
In his previous job, he spent 16 months pursuing paedophiles who use child pornography on the internet.
