Child Protection: First conviction for child trafficking

1 min read
The Metropolitan Police's Child Abuse Investigation Command has secured its first conviction for child trafficking. Sentencing is due to take place next week.

Johan Shah, 36, from Peshawar, Pakistan, and Alia Kanwal, 25, also of Peshawar, have already pleaded guilty to charges including facilitating the illegal entry of three children into the UK.

They will be sentenced for the crimes on 1 October.

Detective Chief Superintendent Peter Spindler, head of the Child Abuse Investigation Command, said: "The Metropolitan Police Service is committed to disrupting trafficking, especially that of children, and importantly to arresting and prosecuting those responsible for this abhorrent crime."

The offences came to light after a young girl was abandoned in Terminal Three of Heathrow Airport on 21 May.

Detectives discovered she had arrived in the UK on a flight from Peshawar, and that she had travelled with Shah, Kanwal, and two other children. The children were all from Afghanistan.
