CHILD POVERTY: World Bank urged to provide funding

Last week, the bank held its first Youth Development and Peace conference in Paris in conjunction with a coalition of youth organisations known as the Big Seven Alliance. This includes the Red Cross, the YMCA and the European Youth Platform. More than 100 young people from 70 countries met with World Bank staff, including president James Wolfensohn and managing director Mamphela Ramphele.

Jody Baker, a national co-ordinator for Y Care International, the international development arm of the YMCA, said: "It's great that there is now a dialogue between the bank and youth organisations."

Urged to fund young people's projects, the bank has also produced a draft strategy on youth consultation.
