INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY: Concern for the wider world

Former Lebanon hostage and president of Y Care International Terry Waite believes current global events emphasise the need for young people to take an active interest in the circumstances of their peers across the world

Young people have seen appalling images of their peers from the UK and overseas involved in conflicts from Iraq to the Democratic Republic of Congo, from Liberia to the Middle East.

Many watched in horror as war was beamed into their living rooms. Many felt so passionately that they left their classrooms and lecture theatres to form protests.

Yet others probably felt an overwhelming sense of hopelessness. What can one person possibly do to make the world a better place? The simple answer is "plenty".

I helped set up Y Care International, the overseas development agency of the YMCA, nearly 20 years ago. Through locally based YMCAs, we work across the developing world on a range of projects - from supporting street children in Colombia to giving young Palestinians hope and options for their future.
