The Government intends to train peer tutors aged 14 to 16 to work with 11- to 14-year-olds to explain the choices available to them and their implications. It will be part of a new advice and guidance system to be made available to young people at key points in their development.
In addition, parents and teachers will be provided with a professional development programme to improve their advice skills and knowledge of the choices available locally.
Other plans include the development of a web site for young people that will set out the opportunities available to them in their region.
Further details will be outlined in the much-delayed youth green paper, as well as the forthcoming skills white paper, which will focus on efforts to provide better joined-up services from youth to adulthood.
