What is it? Linked into nursery chain Busy Bees' corporate social responsibility strategy is a commitment to promote recycling across its 126 nurseries. Last year it linked up with recycling firm Greenzone Facilities Management to provide recycling bins for each nursery. At the chain's Welwyn Garden City nursery there are recycling bins in the kitchen; the staffroom; in the office; and each room used by the children.
How are children and families involved? Recycling is built into the curriculum at the nurseries with children taught the three Rs of reduce, reuse and recycle. Parents are also encouraged to use the recycling bins. Barry Yeomans, estates manager for Busy Bees, says it should be the responsibility of all firms to encourage recycling, including those in the nursery sector. "We cannot ignore our social responsibilities, which include keeping our environment clean and setting a good example," he says.
