How? The children's centre offers comprehensive support for parents in the form of an adult learning programme, for those who wish to study for an NVQ. But it goes one step further than just support and advice by offering placements to many volunteers who are studying for childcare qualifications. Volunteers are nurtured and developed at the centre during their studies, while also gaining valuable experience to set them up for a future job in childcare. There are currently eight parents volunteering at the centre.
Has it worked? The approach appears to have been successful as many parents who volunteered at the centre have gone on to gain full-time employment in local early years settings. The adult learning programme has also helped the largely Bengali community to develop their own literacy skills, which has in turn enabled them to help their children with reading and writing too.
