Who's looking at the future of social work? Quite a few people. Forexample, the Conservative Party is looking at ways to make social workmore responsive to service users; the Children's Workforce DevelopmentCouncil has funded its first projects for the New Types of WorkerProgramme; and the General Social Care Council, Social Care Institutefor Excellence, Children's Workforce Development Council, the Commissionfor Social Care Inspection and Skills for Care are consulting on whichroles and tasks are appropriate.
New types of worker? Changes in practice have to be responsive tochanges in the family and society. The New Types of Worker Programmeaims to encourage workforce development initiatives in social care. Ithas an initial focus on five project areas: domestic abuse; the needs ofvolunteers; integrated service provision in schools; regionalimplementation of the lead professional role; and joint working withfamilies where there are mental health difficulties.
