Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council: Moths

1 min read Education Extra-curricular
What is it? A scheme called Moths (Moving On To High School), which aims to ease the transition experience for pupils moving from primary to secondary school in Blackburn and Darwen.

Why was it needed? The scheme was developed after concerns were raised around the number of pupils excluded in the first year of high school. Larger class sizes, more students, a bigger school site and different teaching styles can all make transition difficult for pupils.

What's changed as a result? There is a peer mentor scheme for pupils in the first year of secondary school. As well as an enhanced programme of support during their first two weeks, school councils are revising behaviour policy and homework is co-ordinated across subjects for year 7 pupils. Primary head teachers are also briefed about the skills children need to develop in preparation.
