The scheme, which begins in June, will be conducted in all primary schools across the area ensuring all children are checked at the end of year five.
The purpose of the scheme is to help authorities gain a better idea of children's weight in the area and to profile potential "hot spots". But children identified as obese or underweight will also be referred to school nurses.
Schools will decide which staff will carry out the measurements but classroom assistants are expected to do the bulk of the checks.
Together with welfare assistants and dinner ladies, whose role has been expanded, they will be trained on measuring weight and height, recording the information and on protocols surrounding self-esteem.
