The move is a u-turn by the Government, which indicated it wasconsidering using school measurements to screen children for obesity, apolicy backed by Parliament's Health Select Committee last year. Underthe guidance, the checks have reverted to their original purpose ofproviding detailed local information.
This will help the Government track how authorities are performingagainst the public service agreement target to halt the rise in obesityof children under 11 by 2010. It will also help health authoritiestarget interventions where they are most needed.
Under the plans, all primary school children will be measured twice.
Once in reception year, when they are four or five years old, and againin Year 6, when they are 10 or 11. Children are currently measured once,in reception year.
