Health News: Obesity - Parents lose veto on weight checks

Parents will no longer need to be approached for permission to carry out height and weight checks on children after it emerged that only half of eligible pupils received them last year.

The move is one of the revisions contained in new guidance for primarycare trusts on the checks. It follows findings that in 2005/06 parentsof heavier children were more likely to opt out of the checks, skewingthe results.

Parents should now be sent a revised letter informing them of the checksand giving them the choice to opt out. Tam Fry, chairman of the ChildGrowth Foundation, said: "Removing the legal obstacle of requiringparents' consent has made this document a whole lot better. You can't doanything meaningful with only 48 per cent of the targeted audience."
