Health News: Obesity - Height and weight checks rejected

The Government will not introduce annual height and weight checks, Children Now has learned.

Senior Department of Health officials had indicated that the Governmentwas strongly considering implementing annual checks (Children Now, 12-18January 2005).

However, guidance expected shortly will only ask schools to weigh andmeasure children once, during the final year of primary school,according to Clare Phillips, interim head of policy at the office of theEnglish children's commissioner. Phillips added that National Children'sBureau research ordered by the commissioner's office had found thatunder-11s had mixed feelings about the checks.

Although younger children, used to being dressed by adults, did not seethem as an invasion of privacy, older children did.
