Last year Holmes, one of the 45,000 people who give their free time to provide this demanding public service, clocked up 1,500 hours of voluntary work - the equivalent of just under 30 hours a week. What's even more impressive is that she fits her St John Ambulance activities around a full-time job as an accounts clerk.
Holmes began her voluntary career aged 14, attending Cleveland's St John Ambulance Cadet division for one night a week. Her time commitment to the organisation increased as she was promoted through the ranks.
Last week she took up her new position as national head of youth for the charity, a key role in the organisation. More than half of St John Ambulance volunteers are under 25, and the youth section is developing a new strategy for its young volunteers, which will be launched in October 2004.
