Big interview: Thank you from the Queen - Gary Stannett, project manager, Kickstart

But there are signs that this could be changing. In recent years the Government has taken an increasing interest in youth work, and the New Year Honours list contained 39 people with links to youth work (YPN, 12-18 January, p2).

Among them is Gary Stannett, project manager of Kickstart, based in Southwark, south London, who was appointed MBE. Founded in 1997, Kickstart has grown from simple beginnings into a significant voluntary sector organisation, encompassing 23 individual projects, employing more than 40 staff, with an annual budget of 1.4m.

Stannett says the MBE is recognition for the work of the project and the team that works on it, but it is also a personal achievement for him.
