So it comes as no surprise that the report of the Hansard Society commission on communication of parliamentary democracy, or Puttnam Commission, which he has been chairing for the past 18 months, is calling for an overhaul of the way Parliament interacts with young people (YPN, 25-31 May, p2).
"I feel genuinely comfortable around young people," he says. "Over the past eight years, I've visited more than 400 schools. If you've lived the sort of life I've lived, with the different careers I've had, you start to feel that you have a reasonable amount to offer. Refining my own ability to communicate with young people, and making it a focus of my life, has helped me enormously."
