But a draft consultation paper launched two weeks ago by Mayor of London Ken Livingstone (YPN 16-22 April) is looking to change this, with the input of young people ultimately leading to a children and young people's strategy for the city. The paper, Towards a child-friendly London, aims to "put children and young people's needs at the heart of policymaking in the capital".

And it's no secret that one of the champions of the strategy, Labour's deputy mayor of London Nicky Gavron, will be gunning for Livingstone's job in next June's mayoral election. Bookmaking firm William Hill makes her an outsider compared with the high-profile incumbent, but young people's policies will undoubtedly lie at the heart of the former youth worker's manifesto as she bids to overturn the odds.
