London mayor election: the key policies for children and families

The next mayor of London will be responsible for a budget of £17bn. So what are the main candidates in May's election pledging to deliver for children, young people and families? We trawl the manifestos to find out.

With less than a month to go before the London mayoral election, the race to replace Boris Johnson as the capital’s mayor looks too tight to call, with polls suggesting up to a quarter of voters are still to decide which candidate to back.

Whoever wins the election on 5 May, will control an annual budget of £17bn and take responsibility for a range of public services, including housing, transport and policing.

The office also funds and commissions the running of many programmes for children and young people, such as tackling youth gangs, promoting sports opportunities and developing employment skills.

Affordable childcare promises to be a key issue for Londoners.
