AFter five months in power, Joe Lepper asks what changes Mayor Boris Johnson has made for young Londoners.

CHILD POVERTY

The voluntary sector will be given a heightened role in addressing child poverty in the capital under Boris Johnson.

Indeed, Conservative leader David Cameron has stressed consistently that charity involvement in public service delivery will be a major theme of a Tory government. London is seen by Cameron as a testing ground for this approach, says John Biggs, who chairs the Greater London Assembly’s budget and performance committee. However, he adds: I’ve never heard a Conservative back Sure Start, but they talk frequently of charities’ role in supporting families.

Johnson has pledged his support for the London Child Poverty Commission, which was set up by his predecessor Ken Livingstone.
