Boris Johnson launches 23m fund for youth offending work

Mayor of London Boris Johnson is encouraging youth organisations to apply for a share of 23 million to help rehabilitate first-time young offenders in the capital.

The programme, jointly funded by the European Social Fund and the London Development Agency (LDA), is open to organisations that help young people gain skills and training.

The deadline for applications is 31 May and the LDA has organised workshops to help groups through the application process.

Boris Johnson said: "This funding will provide skills training in young offender institutes and job placements and continued support for youngsters when they are released."

Johnson said the fund launch was the first step in realising his vision for a "radical new approach" to rehabilitation of first-time young offenders in custody, set out in his youth plan Time for Action.
