Boris Johnson urges Londoners to volunteer for Scouts and Guides

1 min read Youth Work
The mayor of London Boris Johnson is making a rallying cry to encourage 3,000 residents in the capital to give up their time and become adult volunteers so thousands of young people can join uniformed youth groups.

More than 7,000 young people are waiting to join organisations such as the Scouts, Guides, Volunteer Police Cadets, St John’s Ambulance and the Boy’s Brigade because there aren’t enough adult volunteers to help support the groups.

Lizzie Noel, the mayor's adviser on social action and volunteering, said: "Currently, there are around 75,000 young people involved in uniformed activities in London, with many more youngsters waiting to join these groups.

"The mayor wants to increase this number to 100,000 young people over the next five years. To achieve that, we need to attract many more volunteers to lead these groups. The mayor is particularly keen to extend these activities into London's more disadvantaged communities, where due to a mixture of factors – lack of local resources, volunteers and premises – there is a shortage of provision, although the groups that do exist are immensely popular."
