The event coincided with the welcome announcement of continued funding for youth facilities through the Myplace project. At the event, children's minister Tim Loughton singled out fellow guest speaker Jason Thompson, 19, praising him for his close involvement in the inspirational Myplace in Enfield.
Myplace has the involvement of young people at its heart. However, in Enfield the principle of youth engagement was taken to a whole new level. Young people led a community-wide consultation that involved speaking to schools, community groups, disability organisations and local charities. The young people staged a Dragons' Den-style event at which architects who pitched to redesign the centre were interviewed by young people.
