Despite decreasing local authority budgets, it is not all doom and gloom for young people in 2011. The government has secured 134m to ensure that all remaining Myplace projects can continue.

With local authorities getting news of their budget allocations from Whitehall and entering the next difficult stage of identifying savings and cuts, these are nervous times for those in the youth sector. It was therefore welcome news that children's minister Tim Loughton confirmed that the Department for Education has secured £134m over 2011-2013 to ensure all remaining Myplace projects can continue as planned.

As local authorities reshape their youth services it will be vital to develop an infrastructure that is able to reach out to young people and communities to offer both inspiration and support. Myplace programmes have the potential to take on this role.
