The National Youth Agency: Myplace

1 min read
Myplace launched in April this year with 190m of government money over three years to kickstart the Government's vision for improving youth facilities.

In this series we look at a range of generic and specialist youth facilities to encourage ambition and vision in support of Myplace bids, linking each to one of the programme's ten key principles.

Woking Ypod

Key principle: Partnership - supporting genuine cross-sector partnership working between local authority, third, private and other public sector partners in developing and delivering the project.

Woking Ypod is a youth centre, run by Woking YMCA, with drop-in cafe, IT suite, recording studio, performance hall, and counselling and meeting rooms. Development is ongoing on a multi-sports centre. Young people were consulted on what facilities and programmes they wanted. A competition was organised for them to choose a name for the new centre. Partnerships with Surrey Youth Development Service, Surrey Youth Offending Team and Connexions were fostered, alongside work with local schools, youth agencies and Woking Youth Council. There are strong links with the borough council, county council and Youth Development Service, the Learning and Skills Council, Connexions, Surrey Youth Offending Team, local churches and the mosque, the police and youth organisations including Woking Youth Arts Centre, Nacro and faith youth groups. These mean the project can engage the most vulnerable young people, those not in education, employment or training, looked-after young people and ex-offenders.
