Claire worries about the contortions of saying the correct thing

Back in the ancient 80s I had a bit of a reputation for being a hardline feminist.

For several years I was a believer in the feminist, green and socialist manifestos; I believed they went hand in hand. I'd openly challenge, particularly with regard to the power and social construct of language, especially when relating to feminist theory or inequality. This bored people to tears: my nickname was Millie Tant, after the Viz character, and I looked and dressed like her too!

I even lived in a "wimmin's household" for a year. I found it hard to live up to though, not being the "non-smoking, vegetarian, feminist, likes cats, lots of hugs and evenings in" type. I thought I was doing okay, until I was shown the door when I appeared downstairs one morning with a bloke in tow. I got a bit annoyed as well, when my nephew was born and they came out in sympathy.
