Keeer-flump! That was the sound of the ladle of custard hurtling towards my school lunch plate as the "mealtime assistant" (dinner lady in my day) let rip. Woe betide you if you didn't catch it square on - you didn't mess with our canteen matriarch. It usually accompanied some lightweight dessert such as chocolate caramel slice or (and I cringe to admit that we called it this) "period pie", sponge with jam. It was the final step in a stodge-ridden meal, pie and chips or macaroni cheese and mash would have come as an entree.
Didn't do me any harm though. Honestly. Apart from the spots, the constipation, the lethargy and the weight. I grew up from being a fat child into being a fat adult, due to eating habits learned early. But times are changing.
