I was reminded while watching the Brit Awards recently that it is everyone's job to instil confidence and self-esteem in children. I try never to miss it, and confess to wondering each year what it must be like to be up there collecting that award. What an amazing feeling. And wasn't Joss Stone fantastic? Her folks had encouraged her to sing since childhood and now there she was, crowned the Queen of the Brits. I could only look on in admiration and envy.
Because I have always been a frustrated pop star, from the days as a kid when I used to take the kettle plug out of the wall (they had great big three-pronged connectors at the end of the wire in those days) and use it as a microphone as I mimed in the mirror. I wish I had been encouraged to sing as a child. I had opportunities to sing in public when I was in my twenties, but would always bottle out.
