I am a great believer in empowering children and young people and am really proud of some of the achievements that the children we work with have made. We have writers, musicians, actors, newsletter producers and presenters - and they are all under the age of 16 and in care.
One of the things that makes my heart sing is when children share their talents with others. It makes a real difference in a way that adults can't touch.
However, I was reminded recently that sometimes we need to step carefully.
Our group numbers had dwindled, and we organised an event to attract new children. The existing members planned it with workers' support, and we all got excited as the requests to join came back. The older children wanted to take on the role of member-helpers, and we talked about how having new people would change the group dynamics. They decided their main purpose was to welcome new members, and part of this would be agreeing ground rules for behaviour early.
