Being forced to listen to Whitney Houston first thing in the morning singing "I will always love yooooou" is what I would normally call cruel and unusual punishment. At the moment though it is blared through the wall morning, noon and early evening.
Why? Well, the schools are out and I work in an office next to a children's residential unit. Three or four children's services are joined together in the same building. My first thought on coming in this morning was "Please, not again!" but then I began to think about it.
It's a bittersweet old song about love and loss. I have often wondered what the listener is thinking as Whitney hits the high notes. The unit is for children aged eight to 12. They live there for all kinds of reasons, many of them painful.
