Back Page: Social Claire: Look after children's education

1 min read
Claire is appalled that looked-after children are still failed in education.

My partner's son got his GCSE results last week: three Bs and two Cs. Hewas a happy lad, despite his older sister's scoffing, she being the onewith straight As and an honours degree.

In direct contrast, I was appalled this week to hear the findings of anew report, Failed by the System, which tells us that looked-afterchildren are still being let down in education. Well, there's asurprise. Isn't it odd that while we know things for years it takes apublicised piece of research before anyone starts taking issues likethis seriously?

This Government is the parent of more than 60,000 looked-after childrenand young people at any one time. It is responsible for the upbringingof those children, making sure they have everything they need, and thatthey are encouraged, nurtured and, dare I say it, loved as much aschildren growing up in their own families. Except that in practice we'reseeing a different picture.
