Back Page: Social Claire - Bichard's demands are overdue

1 min read
Claire is horrified by the state of the child protection system in England.

I recently took on a new member of staff, and her Criminal RecordsBureau check took three months to clear. We were desperate to get her inand enquired if it was possible for her to start work and not havecontact with children until it came through. But quite rightly theanswer was no.

Last week I talked about safeguarding and the children's index, wondering if we were going overboard in our attempts to ensure childrenand young people are protected. I was relieved to see that some of theconcerns I shared were addressed to a point where we could all breathe abit more easily.

But now it's all gone pear shaped. Over the last week the press has beenfull of stories about known sex offenders being allowed to work inschools. Eh? On the one hand, we're tightening, on the other, if someonehas been cautioned for downloading child pornography off the internet, well, they might be okay really - maybe it was a one off or for"research" reasons. Oh yeah?
