Back Page: My week - Tense trip to Barnardo's original girl village

1 min read
Monday: Drag myself out of bed early to travel to the head office in Barkingside, Essex. It's the original girl's village created by Thomas Barnardo and is now our HQ. I love it there; it's a living reminder of the sanctuary he created for children.

I have a meeting at lunchtime with our CEO Martin Narey - eek. I'm a bit anxious to say the least. But I needn't have worried - what a nice bloke. I go into my nervous Magnus Pike-lookalike mode, all jabber and windmill arms, but he takes it well and promises to visit our service soon.

Tuesday: One of our regular lads comes bounding into the office. Noticing a poster on the wall for our Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) workers forum, he suddenly asks "Can I go to this? I'm desperate to meet other people who are gay."

I explain that it is an adult group. "I'm fine about my sexuality but other people aren't," he says. "I'm getting bullied and I just want to be able to feel good about being me." We talk some more and I tell him about a local youth project for LGBT young people. He rings them up and arranges to meet a youth worker to talk. The excitement and relief on his face is palpable.
