Back Page: My Week - Our helper seems like a different person

Monday - Two new staff members start working with us today. One is a care leaver. I love the fact that we actually employ young people to work with other children and youngsters as peer mentors, and they make great role models.

Her job will focus on working with other young people who are at risk of their employment or training places breaking down. The other is our new advocacy worker. It seemed like a good idea at the time to start them both together. But by the end of the day I'm inductioned-out.

Tuesday - One of our regular girls is at risk of permanent exclusion from school, so as part of a package to prevent this happening, we've offered her a work placement once a week.

She comes bounding in the door at 9am, ready for work. I'm finding it hard to reconcile the lovely, thoughtful, enthusiastic girl I spend the day with, with the mouthy, obnoxious and uncooperative person we hear about from outside. She's a star, writing articles for our newsletter and helping to plan a participation session. At the end of the day she even shouts "Thank you for having me" as she whirls back out of the door.
