Back Page: My week - Jeremy Clarkson has nothing on our lads

1 min read
Monday: Start with a tour of residential wings, meeting as many young people and staff as possible. Then greet this week's new intake of 20 lads. It pains me that at this young age the group already includes some familiar faces.

Appointments today include a Japanese government delegation here to tour the young offender institution (YOI), and meetings on de-escalation techniques for three particularly violent and challenging lads. And I'm trying hard to ensure our Barnardo's staff member can complete her social work placement with us on site. Finish the day with a cuppa, talking to some of our most vulnerable lads.

Tuesday: A terrific visit from Keith Towler, children's commissioner for Wales, with his team and a BBC crew in tow. He really engages with all of our Welsh lads, outlining the services on offer after release. Then off to Pembrokeshire to see four boys undertake a Prince's Trust course. The programme gives them an obvious enthusiasm and focus on the future, as well as an opportunity to think through the consequences of their actions.
