Apparently, everyone loves a winner. I wouldn't know about this since we usually come second. In recent years, we've won more runners-up and second-place prizes than you can shake an entry form at.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not complaining. Second prize is certainly better than third, or not having a prize at all. In fact, coming second has got a lot going for it. Unlike those in first place, runners-up can go upwards and onwards next time. I'm quite proud of my wall of second-place certificates.
Some would say that these near-miss awards are good for us. They keep us keen, focused on improvement and stop us from sitting back and resting on our laurels.
