I'm fast coming to the conclusion that the more you work with young people, the less you actually know about them. Just when you think you've got them sussed, they have this knack of reminding you that you actually know nothing.
A few weeks ago, I was again struck by how little I know. This time it was from young people in our lesbian and gay youth group. We were having an end-of-term evaluation session and despite what I thought was a really good programme over the past few months, three members of the group were decidedly lukewarm about it.
At first I couldn't understand why they weren't more enthusiastic. We had waved our banner at the national gay and lesbian march Pride, danced in the rain at a festival, been to see a gay play about relationships and had a sexual health worker in to scare us stupid about sexually transmitted infections. What more could a young gay man want?
