Each summer I set aside a week to visit all our buildings and spend some time, paintbrush in hand, getting my hands dirty.

It's not my favourite week of the year. But it probably is one of my most useful. Apart from presentation evenings and the occasional meeting or interview, I don't get out nearly enough to visit our buildings. You've heard all the excuses before: too much to do, too many meetings, urgent reports to write. So the only thing for it is to block out some time and not let anything stop me.

And once I'm out there? Well it's not for the fainthearted. You won't find the meaning of youth work down the back of a youth club sofa, but you would be surprised what I have pulled out. Each year I forget how much of a beating buildings get from young people. A year in the life of a youth centre certainly adds more than a few wrinkles. So along with some great colleagues and the world's best caretaker, we do our best to paper over the cracks.
