No-one doubts the impact technology has had on changing the quality of life in the modern era. However, are we guilty of overlooking its potential threats? I'm not talking about a cataclysmic Armageddon such as that portrayed in the Hollywood blockbuster Terminator, but a much quieter revolution in internet technologies - social networking sites.

About 200 young people caused 20,000 worth of damage to a family home earlier this month after a house party was advertised by a 17-year-old Durham girl on MySpace. According to the girl, classmates hacked into her site and invited teenagers from right across the country. The damage, described as "house rape" by the 48-year-old mother of the young girl, was extensive.
