I received a synopsis recently of the findings on the theme of "the family" from The Children's Society's Good Childhood Inquiry into childhood in the UK. The summary starts with a powerful and cogent statement: "Families are the most powerful influence on children's lives".

Reading through the report I was amazed to find statements from young people, which highlighted their depth of understanding about the human condition. For example, when asked to choose between love, respect, support and freedom, in terms of their importance in family relationships, 70 per cent of children and young people interviewed by The Children's Society chose love.
