Back Page: Last word

I received a letter last week from one of our young prison clients. He wrote to express thanks for the support he'd received from his community (through annual letters and gifts), and the telephone and letter support he'd received from our organisation over the past three years. He said it had helped him come to terms with his own past, and that he can now see a positive future, whereas before there was no other option but despair. Although heartwarming moments like these are one of the highlights of my job, I couldn't help but think of the countless other young offenders within the penal system who feel their communities have rejected them, and that they are now destined for a life of misery and destitution.
