The main political parties have been scrapping to claim the environmental high ground, convinced that the votes of younger generations depend on it.

Throughout their primary education, young people are intimately engaged with the natural world. I remember learning about the Exxon Valdez disaster as a primary school student and feeling thoroughly worked up about its devastating effects. Primary education is an excellent platform from which to encourage young people to become environmental custodians, who proactively care for the world's natural resources.

However, during the teenage years, we transform would-be eco-warriors into consumers by bombarding them with countless advertising messages, and as a result caring for the environment is viewed as a lifestyle choice, rather than a core responsibility.
