Watching the film The Pursuit of Happyness, I was enchanted by the symbolism of the Rubik's cube. The puzzle is a metaphor for Will Smith's character's perseverance and dedication. I've since wondered if it might hold the answer to greater challenges closer to home.

Multiculturalism is this year's bugbear. Policy Exchange recently published a report, Living Apart Together: British Muslims and the Paradox of Multiculturalism, on the challenges that multicultural policies have created, especially from the viewpoint of young British Muslims.

The report states that multiculturalism is contributing to the balkanisation of communities. It is an appealing hypothesis, especially in the context of a corresponding poll in which 37 per cent of Muslims aged 16 to 24 said they would like to live under sharia law. However, although multicultural approaches have not been as successful as they should have, the Policy Exchange's analysis is too simplistic.
